20 Years of MLC 2006: A Milestone for Seafarers' Rights and Welfare

Twenty years have passed since the adoption of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), which has been recognized as the “fourth pillar” of shipping, alongside safety at sea and environmental protection. The convention has established comprehensive standards for seafarers' working and living conditions, contributing to the promotion of decent work and fair competition. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber, as the representative of the Cypriot shipping industry, is participating in the anniversary celebration, highlighting the enduring value of the MLC 2006. Cyprus, as a significant maritime center, ratified the convention in 2012 and remains a steadfast supporter of its goals, recognizing the importance of seafarers' welfare for the sustainability of the industry.
