Extensive investigations are underway in Cyprus, eleven days after the disappearance of 13.5 kilograms of TNT explosives from the Kallochorio Firing Range in the province of Larnaca. The Ministry of Defense announced that the investigation within the National Guard is expected to be completed next week, while the police investigation continues at a rapid pace. The case has caused strong reactions, with AKEL accusing the Ministry of Defence of lack of information and expressing concerns that the theft may have occurred “from within.” AKEL is seeking answers to questions regarding the possible involvement of National Guard personnel, the responsibilities for lack of surveillance and the measures taken to address problems of understaffing and lack of training. The disappearance of the explosives has caused public concern, as there is fear that they may end up in the hands of the criminal underworld. AKEL emphasizes the need for full transparency and the immediate completion of the investigation, in order to clarify all aspects of the case and protect public safety.
