10% Increase in Road Deaths in Cyprus in 2025

According to preliminary data from the European Commission, road deaths in Cyprus increased by 10% in 2025 compared to 2024, reaching 46 per million inhabitants. However, compared to 2019, there is a 13% decrease. The distribution of deaths by month varies, with most occurring in January and December. At the EU level, there was an overall 3% decrease in road deaths in 2025, despite the increase in vehicles and kilometers traveled. The Commission points out that most member states are not on track to achieve the EU's goal of reducing road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030. Notable reductions were recorded in Estonia (-38%) and Greece (-22%), while Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Poland, and Romania appear to be on track to achieve the goal. However, Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia still have the highest mortality rates in the EU. The safest roads in the EU are in Sweden and Denmark. According to the Commission, for every death, approximately five people are seriously injured, resulting in around 100,000 serious injuries in the EU each year. Rural roads remain the most dangerous, with 53% of deaths occurring there. In urban areas, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles) account for 70% of deaths, while most collisions involve cars and trucks. Men make up 77% of the victims. The EU has set a goal of reducing deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030 and zero deaths by 2050.
