Parliament Rejects Changes to Term Limits for Mayors and Community Leaders

The Cypriot Parliament rejected proposals to revise the provisions regarding the number of terms for elected officials of Municipalities and Communities. The proposals, submitted by DISY MP Panikos Leonidis, suggested that terms served before the 2029 elections should not be counted towards the maximum term limit. The Parliament's decision was based on disagreements between parties. AKEL supported reducing terms but disagreed with the proposed retroactive change, while an independent MP argued that those who are capable should be able to continue serving. The rejection of the proposals maintains the existing framework for limiting the terms of elected officials.
