When Persia Became Iran: The Decision That Changed the Geopolitical Game Forever

The decision of Iran to be renamed from Persia in 1935 was a strategic move that marked a change in the national identity and external image of the country. Reza Shah Pahlavi sought to disconnect the country from the “exotic” image of Persia and project a stronger, independent national identity. The name change coincided with the increasing importance of oil in the region and Iran's desire to gain control of its natural resources. Britain had already gained significant influence in the Iranian economy and politics through the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. The renaming was part of a broader effort to redefine the country as a sovereign player in the region, not as a protectorate. This decision marked the beginning of a geopolitical game around oil that continues to this day. The name change was an important step towards the Islamic Revolution of 1979, as it strengthened national consciousness and the desire for independence and self-determination.
