Police Officers Demand Urgent Meeting Regarding New Work Schedule

Police officers in Cyprus are reacting to the recent announcements by the Chief of Police regarding changes to their work schedule, which will be implemented from January 1st. Specifically, the new schedule for those working the 12X36 system provides for a reduction in continuous work from 12 hours to 11 hours per two-day cycle. At the same time, supervisors of police officers working the new schedule will be required to grant them an additional day off (day of work) for every 38 eleven-hour shifts, as compensation for the extra working hours. The total day of work will amount to four eleven-hour shifts and 7.5 hours per year. The Police assure that the implementation of the new schedule will lead to an increase in personnel per shift, reducing police fatigue and strengthening the operational capacity of the force. Furthermore, it is emphasized that there will be no reduction in salaries or shift, Sunday or public holiday allowances. The Cyprus Police Association has already sent a letter to the Mixed Police Committee (MPC) requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the issue. The response from the Ministry of Justice is awaited with interest, as police officers seek to ensure that their rights are protected and that the new schedule is sustainable and fair.
