Law Passed to Expand CYTA's Activities into the Energy Sector

The Cypriot Parliament has approved a law allowing CYTA to expand its activities into the energy sector. The law was passed with 29 votes in favor, 2 against, and 14 abstentions. Its purpose is to enable CYTA to operate in the energy sector, in addition to telecommunications and technology. During the discussion, an amendment was approved excluding CYTA from conventional energy production, while amendments from AKEL seeking additional safeguards were rejected. MP Andreas Themistocleous opposed the law, expressing concerns about competition with the private sector. Other MPs, such as Kostis Eustathiou, supported the law, believing it would strengthen competition in the electricity sector. MP Irene Charalambidou expressed opposition, speaking of “energy alchemy” and the government’s failure to address problems in the electricity market. Alecos Tryfonidis argued that the regulation strengthens ATHEK and allows it to offer combined service packages. Ilias Myrianthous argued that ATHEK’s entry into the energy sector could boost competition and benefit citizens with lower prices. The passage of the law marks a significant change in Cyprus' energy policy.
