Golden Dawn: No Leniency from Court – What It Means and Who Risks Prison

The Five-Member Criminal Court of Appeal unanimously rejected the requests for recognition of mitigating circumstances submitted by the convicted former MPs of the Golden Dawn. The rejection includes the requests from the organization's 'leadership', including Nikos Michaloliakos, Ilias Kasidiaris, and Yannis Lagos. Mitigating circumstances were recognized only for five individuals, former MPs Antonis Gregos and Dimitris Koukoutsis, as well as three other members of the organization, due to good behavior after the act. The prosecutor of the court, Kyriakos Stefanatos, had proposed maintaining the original sentences for all, except for the five who received leniency. The non-recognition of mitigating circumstances means that the convicted cannot receive a sentence of less than five years in prison. This means that those who have not served their original sentence, such as Eleni Zaroulia and St. Boukouras, will be sent to prison.
