Christodoulides: Aiming for Water Security in Cyprus – Inauguration of Cleo and Erato Reservoirs

President Nikos Christodoulides inaugurated two new reservoirs, "Cleo" and "Erato", with a total capacity of 17,200 cubic meters, emphasizing the importance of water security for Cyprus. He noted that the water sufficiency of Nicosia is significantly increased, covering needs for more than 36 hours in case of water supply disruption. The President referred to plans for water projects worth over 200 million euros for the period 2024-2030, but also stressed the need for developing water awareness, as Cyprus has one of the highest water consumption rates in the EU, with some areas exceeding 500 liters per person daily. He pointed out that Cyprus is particularly affected by the climate crisis, with rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall, making water management a top priority. The 2024-2025 hydrological year is expected to be one of the driest since 1902. The strategy for water security includes three main pillars: increasing the available amount of water from non-conventional sources, improving and expanding storage and transport infrastructure, and reducing demand. The issue has been included in the central priorities of the Presidency, in consultation with the European Union.
