Mayor Criticizes Lack of Protocols During Emergency at British Bases in Cyprus

The Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, has criticized the lack of protocols and coordination for managing emergencies within the British Bases in Cyprus. In his testimony to the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, he stated that “even the British did not expect the attack” and that there was chaos in the first hours after the incident. He emphasized the lack of jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus within the Bases and the absence of a clear framework for action, as well as the inadequacy of shelters and early warning sirens. The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, announced the approval of a bill to transform Civil Defense into Civil Protection, while the Committee Chairman, Aristos Damianou, highlighted the long-standing shortcomings in Cyprus's civil protection system.
