Published February 12, 2026, 09:35

A dead sperm whale, male, approximately five meters long and weighing 1.5 tons, washed ashore on the beach in occupied Acanthou. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon and mobilized teams from the "wildlife rehabilitation center" based in occupied Vouno to remove the animal. The center's director, Kemal Basat, stated that the incident occurs in a period close to a similar event three years ago, where 13 sperm whales had washed ashore. The transfer of the whale is difficult due to the rocky coastline. Subsequently, the animal will be transported to the center's facilities for a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
