Cyprus Presidency to Prioritize Protection of Vulnerable Adults in EU Council

The Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, Kostas Fytiris, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU for the first half of 2026 to the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. The focus is on the protection of citizens, combating discrimination, and strengthening social rights. Particular emphasis will be placed on the protection of vulnerable adults, with the aim of rapidly completing negotiations on the relevant Regulation. In addition, the recognition of parenthood in cross-border cases will be promoted, taking into account previous discussions and opinions. Minister Fytiris stressed the importance of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the need to strengthen the EU's independence through its competitiveness.
