Cyprus Faces Low Terror Risk, Minister Says

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Constantinos Phytiris, stated that the risk of terrorist attacks or Cyprus becoming a target is very low, due to the country's historical role as a center for peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. Although organized crime and terrorism may occasionally be linked, Mr. Phytiris reminded that Cyprus has experienced very few terrorist attacks in the last 30-40 years. The Police are constantly taking security measures at potential targets, taking into account geopolitical developments and the interests of involved countries, such as Iran, the USA, and the UK. The Minister emphasized that Cyprus maintains good relations with all countries in the region and functions as a hub for resolving disputes. Regarding organized crime, Mr. Phytiris mentioned that prisons are filling up and the Police are arresting people involved in criminal activities daily. Furthermore, the Minister acknowledged the internationalization of organized crime and the effort to organize criminal groups under various umbrellas, a phenomenon observed in other European countries as well. The Cypriot Presidency is working to create information exchange systems for the prevention and suppression of organized crime. Mr. Phytiris expressed his optimism that the Police are on the right track and will continue cooperation at both international and domestic levels. Finally, he referred to the surveillance bills expected to be approved by the Parliament, which will be an important tool for preventing criminal acts.
