Phytiris Determined to Transform Prisons into Correctional Facilities – Dismisses Council of Europe Observations

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Phytiris, appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and was briefed on the situation in the Central Prisons. The Minister has visited the prisons four times and is planning a fifth, stating his determination to improve detention conditions and transform the prisons into a genuine correctional facility. He acknowledged problems such as overcrowding and the co-existence of prisoners with different sentences, emphasizing that a building from 1890 cannot meet modern needs. He expressed his opposition to the observations of the Council of Europe, considering them an insult to Cyprus as a state of law. At the same time, he announced the announcement of 90 new positions for correctional officers, who will receive specialized training from expert criminologists and psychologists, as well as the upcoming approval of the position of prison director. Finally, he informed about the installation of a mobile phone detection system, with the seizure of 90 devices in the last three months, and the upcoming solution to the signal jamming problem within two months.
