Cyprus to Amend Constitution for Telecom Surveillance to Combat Crime

Minister of Justice Kostas Fytiris described the package of bills regarding telecommunications surveillance as an institutional response to increased criminal activity. The bills concern the amendment of the Constitution (Article 17) to allow legal monitoring of telecommunications by security authorities. The purpose is to strengthen the framework for protecting the security and sovereignty of Cyprus, as well as effectively combating serious and organized crime. The proposed changes include expanding the reasons for lifting privacy, including crimes such as attempted murder, human trafficking, terrorism, and illegal immigration. Written approval from the Attorney General is required to lift privacy.
