Student Grant: MP Reactions to the Amount Proposed by the Government

The government bill to amend the criteria for increasing the beneficiaries of the state student grant and increasing the amount of the grant has provoked reactions in the Parliamentary Education Committee. The government proposes an increase of €10.5 million, however several MPs and student organization representatives have described it as insufficient, given rising prices. Reactions focused on the low amount of the basic allowance increase, as well as the need to link the allowance to the consumer price index. In addition, there were questions about the President's announcement of an increase in the student grant by €14 million, which does not appear to be materializing. Student organization representatives and MPs proposed including families with 4 children in the student grant, as well as examining the possibility of increasing the allowance for low-income families. The discussion is expected to continue, with the aim of finding a solution that meets the needs of students.
