One in Four Children in the EU at Risk of Poverty

According to the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Klea Papaellina, one in four children in the European Union, approximately 20 million children, are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Ms. Papaellina presided over the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumers Council (EPSCO) in Brussels, where the need for immediate and decisive action to address this phenomenon was emphasized. Poverty in childhood has long-term consequences, limiting opportunities and perpetuating inequalities. The Cypriot Presidency of the EU places particular emphasis on the well-being of children and the fight against child poverty, considering it a central element of its agenda. The presentation of the EU's first anti-poverty strategy during the Cypriot presidency is a significant step in this direction. The Deputy Minister stressed that tackling child poverty requires preventive and targeted measures, as well as coordination between member states. The need for immediate action is underscored by the striking statistics showing the scale of the problem. In addition to tackling poverty, the EPSCO Council also discussed the updated Gender Equality Strategy 2026-2030, in conjunction with the celebration of International Women's Day, as well as the Strategy for Combating Racism 2026–2030.
