Cyprus: Minister of Labor Calls Pension Reform a 'Test and Opportunity'

The Minister of Labor, Marinos Mousiouttas, described the pension reform as the biggest test but also an opportunity for Cyprus, emphasizing the need for social dialogue and realism. Speaking at the 30th Pan-Cypriot Conference of SEK, the Minister stated that the completion of the reform discussion aims to be done by the new Parliament by 2026, with implementation in 2027, confirming a measurable political commitment. Mr. Mousiouttas praised the role of SEK in shaping the Cypriot labor achievements and stressed the importance of tripartite cooperation for modernizing the labor market. The pension reform was characterized as the top priority of the Ministry, aiming for the dignity of pensioners, the adequacy of pensions, and the long-term sustainability of the social security system. The Minister emphasized that pensions are a mirror of social justice and are important for both current pensioners and new generations. The trust of young people in the system is crucial for ensuring social cohesion and economic success. At the same time, he acknowledged the demographic challenges and changes in the labor market that put pressure on social security systems. Finally, Mr. Mousiouttas stressed the need for realism and avoiding hasty solutions, proposing a more resilient, transparent, and fair system that ensures the adequacy and sustainability of pensions. The reform, according to the Minister, requires cooperation and responsibility from all stakeholders.
