Interior Minister: We Suffer in Terms of Readiness in Civil Defense Due to Gaps Created in Previous Decades

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, acknowledged the insufficient readiness of Civil Defense in Cyprus, attributing the situation to omissions of previous decades. This recognition comes after the drone attack on the Akrotiri airbase. The minister stressed that efforts to reorganize and upgrade the civil protection framework began in 2023. The civil defense shelter creation program, implemented from 1999 to 2013, covered approximately 30% of the population, a percentage that remained stable until 2023. However, this approach had weaknesses. The government has changed strategy, prioritizing the identification of public spaces for shelter creation, increasing population coverage to around 45% and continuing efforts to find more spaces, including providing an additional building factor for buildings with basements.
