Agriculture Ministry: Foot-and-Mouth Situation Serious but No Cause for Alarm

The Ministry of Agriculture acknowledges the seriousness of the foot-and-mouth disease situation but assures that there is no cause for alarm. During a broad meeting, it was decided to involve the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association, restrict the movement of hunters in the affected areas, and implement biosecurity measures. Specifically, it was decided to establish a coordination center under the direction of the Veterinary Services, intensify controls to ensure compliance with measures, block the livestock areas of Larnaca, and extend spraying to neighboring areas. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that the management of the situation focuses on protecting farmers, production, and the food chain, with continuous monitoring and taking all necessary measures. It is reminded that foot-and-mouth disease does not affect public health. It is pointed out that the protocols were implemented within 48 hours of confirmation of the cases, with the immediate closure of affected units and full mobilization of the Veterinary Services. At the same time, the Police are investigating the incidents, as it is estimated that the virus had been active in the Oroklini area for about two weeks before confirmation, without timely notification to the competent authorities.
