Pomos Dam Overflows After Recent Rainfall

The Pomos Dam overflowed on Saturday morning due to recent rainfall, marking a positive development after a prolonged period of drought. Although one of the smaller dams in Cyprus, with a capacity of 890,000 cubic meters of water, the overflow is particularly significant after a dry year and boosts expectations for an improvement in the hydrological situation. The Provincial Engineer of the Water Development Department of Paphos, Haris Kasioulis, stated that the overflow was expected as the dam had already approached its maximum capacity. The overflow also represents an environmental respite for the local ecosystem, strengthening water resources and contributing to biodiversity. Residents of the area gathered to watch the impressive sight, while the Deputy Mayor of Pomos of the Polis Chrysochous Municipality, Andreas Dionysiou, emphasized the importance of the dam for the primary sector, as greenhouses, perennial crops, and vegetable gardens are irrigated. The Pomos dam supports the irrigation of the communities of Pomos, Pachiammos, and New Municipalities. In the Polis Chrysochous district, there are also the Evretou, Argaka, and Agia Marina dams, which show differences in their fullness levels. Water adequacy is a fundamental factor for the sustainability of agricultural production and the economic development of the region. The full dam provides an optimistic picture for the continuation of cultivation and the avoidance of irrigation problems.
