MPs Defend Their Positions on Foreclosure Proposals

Members of the Finance Committee commented on the proposals for foreclosures, expressing their positions on their constitutionality. MP Averof Neofytou of DISY considers the write-off of the remaining loan amount after the imposition of interest to be constitutional, while MP Aristos Damianou of AKEL accused DISY of hypocrisy, reminding them of their refusal to tax the unexpected profits of banks. The AKEL MP stressed that his party has submitted 35 proposals for laws to protect borrowers and reduce the privileges of banks. MP Zacharias Koulias of DIKO requested speeches in the Plenary Session on his proposals, while the President of DIKO, Nikola Papadopoulos, described as unconstitutional proposals that interfere with private contracts. The President of DIKO stated that, given the good economic situation in Cyprus, there is potential for resolving the issue of foreclosures and protecting borrowers. All MPs agreed that protecting borrowers is important, but disagreed on how to achieve this goal.
