Cyprus Defense Minister: British Bases, Not Cyprus, Were Threatened

Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas stated that British bases in Cyprus, and not the Republic of Cyprus, were the target of recent threats, following a trilateral meeting with the Presidents of Cyprus and France. He emphasized that Greece and France are working to create a European "shield of self-protection" with strong defense. He expressed gratitude to Greece for the immediate dispatch of frigates to strengthen Cyprus's security. Mr. Palmas clarified that, although the bases are located in Cyprus, Cyprus is proactively taking measures to protect its citizens and critical infrastructure, with the support of its allies. He acknowledged the risks in the region, emphasizing the fluidity of the geopolitical environment, regardless of potential peace or calm. The Defense Minister stressed that the initiatives of Greece and France are an example of the need for a strong European defense, as the EU cannot be a strong political force without a strong defense. He emphasized that Europe must take into account current threats, such as Turkey for Greece and the occupation for Cyprus. Pride was expressed in the Greek frigate "KIMON" protecting Cyprus, and the feeling of national upliftment felt by Cypriots due to Greek support. The meeting was characterized as being of high symbolic and political importance, with significant political messages.
