Tsiknopempti in Cyprus: From Bacchanalian Feasts to Limassol Carnival

Tsiknopempti is one of the most vibrant and popular traditions of the Cypriot Carnival, marking the start of meat-eating before Great Lent. The roots of the celebration lie in the Bacchanalian feasts of antiquity, associated with the fertility of the earth. With the dominance of Christianity, the custom was adapted to the Orthodox calendar. In Cyprus, Tsiknopempti is linked to the start of carnival events, especially in Limassol, where the tradition dates back to the medieval period. From a spontaneous folk celebration, it evolved into an organized event with gatherings, barbecues, and dances. Today, Tsiknopempti is a nationwide Cypriot festival with a social character, as evidenced by the events organized in villages and organized events.
