Deadly Factory Explosion in Trikala: Three Arrested

Three individuals, the factory owner, the safety technician, and the shift technician, have been arrested and face serious charges following the fatal explosion at the Biolanta biscuit factory in Trikala, which claimed the lives of five female workers. The indictment includes offenses such as manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, arson, and explosion. According to the Fire Department, the autopsy revealed punctured propane pipes in the factory basement. Furthermore, testimonies from employees report previous gas leaks and complaints that were not addressed. The Biolanta management announced that it will provide immediate support to the victims' families, in addition to compensation. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Development clarified that the responsibility for the factory's licensing lies with the Thessaly Region, as Biolanta operates under a 'notification' system rather than requiring prior approval. This means the company declares the start of operations, and inspections are carried out afterwards by various agencies. The fire safety inspection previously conducted at the factory will be included in the indictment. The suspects are being questioned by the arson crime unit (DAEE) and will be brought before the competent prosecutor in Trikala on Wednesday. The tragedy has caused shock and grief in the local community, and further developments are expected regarding the circumstances that led to the explosion. The incident highlights issues of workplace safety and the effectiveness of inspections in industrial facilities. The investigation will focus on determining the causes of the propane pipe punctures and investigating any omissions or negligence that contributed to the explosion.
