Trump Considers Inviting Lukashenko to White House or Mar-a-Lago

The U.S. special envoy for Belarus, John Kohl, confirmed that the U.S. is considering inviting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to meet with Donald Trump, either at the White House or his residence at Mar-a-Lago. Talks about the invitation have been ongoing for months, but nothing has been finalized. Lukashenko has already stated that he received an invitation from Trump to meet at Mar-a-Lago to discuss a "major deal". This move signals an effort by the U.S. to reconnect with Lukashenko, a close ally of Vladimir Putin. Such a meeting would be beneficial for Lukashenko, who has been subjected to sanctions from the West due to the suppression of protesters in 2020 and his support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In parallel, the release of 250 political prisoners in Belarus, following coordination with the U.S., led to the lifting of some sanctions from the country's financial sector and from fertilizer production companies. In total, around 500 political prisoners have been released as a result of U.S. involvement, including opposition leaders and foreign nationals. However, the lifting of sanctions is linked to the continued improvement of Belarus's behavior and Lukashenko's commitment to stop politically motivated arrests. Kohl did not clarify whether conditions would be set for the Trump-Lukashenko meeting, leaving the final decision to the president. The hope is to secure the release of the remaining political prisoners by the end of the year, although nearly 900 remain in prison.
