Greece on Strike: Nationwide Protests Mark Anniversary of Tempi Train Tragedy

Greece is mobilizing with a general strike and mass rallies across the country, as a sign of protest against the Tempi train tragedy. Rallies are scheduled in Athens (Syntagma Square) and Thessaloniki (Venizelos Statue), while other cities will also participate. Labor centers, ADEDY, federations of private employees, construction workers, craftsmen, the Actors' Union, and the Panhellenic Maritime Federation are participating in the strike, resulting in closed theaters and canceled ship and train routes. In Athens, buses and trams will operate on a limited schedule (9:00 AM - 9:00 PM) to facilitate the movement of protesters. The operation of the metro remains uncertain, with a possibility of following the same schedule. In Thessaloniki, six metro stations will remain closed from 10:00 AM. At the same time, memorial events are taking place to mark the three years since the Tempi train tragedy, with a vigil at the Church of the Holy Trinity and a gathering on the lawn of the Philosophy School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. This mobilization is a strong expression of grief and outrage over the tragedy, as well as a demand for justice and accountability from those responsible.
