Cyprus Parliament Committee Discusses 'Golden Visa' Program

The Parliamentary Committee on Interior discussed a bill proposed by AKEL regarding the 'Golden Visa' program. The proposal aims to obligate the Government to present regulations governing the program to the Parliament, otherwise it will be abolished within three months. AKEL MP Giorgos Loukaidis emphasized that the program is high-risk and that the European Union is calling for its abolition, recalling the problems that arose with the 'golden passports'. He also mentioned negative observations in the 2023 Auditor General's report that reinforce AKEL's concerns. Mr. Loukaidis also highlighted that the program affects the housing stock and makes it more difficult for citizens to access affordable housing, expressing hope that the proposal will be passed in the Plenary Session.
