The Protocol, the Handkerchief, and the Essence

The recent meeting between Mitsotakis and Erdoğan in Ankara was substantial and took place with a clear agenda from the Greek side. Kyriakos Mitsotakis raised the issues of the Aegean Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean and international law, as well as the issue of Cyprus, while Erdoğan chose not to directly address the Cypriot issue. The lack of reference to Cyprus by Erdoğan indicates his preference to discuss the issue in private, where he can avoid commitments. The meeting showed confidence from the Greek side and determination to set red lines and not make concessions on key issues. Greece demonstrated a more mature attitude, avoiding obsessions and focusing on the essence of the issues. Turkey's silence on Cyprus highlights the importance of the island as a key to Turkey's relations with the EU and to stability in the region. Cyprus is not an issue that can be ignored or neglected.
