US Strikes Iranian Island of Khark – Escalating Tensions

The US has carried out airstrikes on targets on the Iranian island of Khark, which is vital for Iran's oil exports. Donald Trump claimed the strikes were “one of the most powerful bombing runs in the history of the Middle East” and that he “eliminated” military targets on the island, while avoiding hitting oil infrastructure. Iran responded by threatening that if the US strikes oil facilities on Khark, it will immediately destroy all oil, economic, and energy facilities in the region linked to the US. The Revolutionary Guards also warned that they consider all US interests in the United Arab Emirates to be legitimate targets. The island of Khark is a key oil export terminal, through which about 90% of Iranian crude oil is exported. Despite the war, activity on the island continues normally, with tankers loading oil until recently. There is speculation about a possible US occupation of the island, however, this would be a dangerous undertaking. The situation is tense and there is a risk of escalation of the conflict. The threats and clashes between the US and Iran are increasing concerns about the security of the region and global energy markets.
