Organized Crime Takes Center Stage at Informal EU Ministerial Meeting in Nicosia

The informal meeting of EU Ministers for Internal Affairs and Justice concluded in Nicosia, focusing on organized crime. The Ministers agreed on the need for European solutions and coordinated action to address the modern challenges of justice, as organized crime is a common denominator in various areas. Topics discussed included the recovery of assets from criminal activities, the protection of cultural heritage, and alternative penalties for minors and young people involved in criminal cases due to drug use. The Ministers emphasized the importance of strengthening the prevention and combating of organized and cross-border crime. Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, stated that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU places particular emphasis on the need to unite forces, respond quickly, and utilize all available information to effectively combat organized crime. The main criminal activities discussed included drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and the protection provided by criminal organizations through extortion. In addition, the problem of illegal export of cultural goods, estimated at a cost of 5 billion euros, was mentioned.
