President Outlines 'Clear Plan' for Sovereign Base Areas

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Cyprus has a 'clear plan' for how it will proceed on all issues relating to the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs). He informed the British Government and the National Council about this plan. The President emphasized that Turkish Cypriots can have a say in the negotiations regarding the SBAs only if they return to the Republic of Cyprus, while Turkey can have a say only after recognizing the Republic of Cyprus. President Christodoulides mentioned that negotiations have taken place in the past regarding the non-military development of areas within the SBAs, with positive results. He expressed hope that discussions will begin soon, but the current priority is managing the crisis. He stressed that there are over 10,000 Cypriot citizens within the SBAs and that the government has a duty to ensure their safety. The government is prepared to respond to the reasonable demands of the Cypriot people.
