Painting Scam Lands Man 7 Years in Prison

A man with a long history of fraud has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for money laundering, following a case where €125,000 was obtained through false pretenses. This sentence, combined with the initial 3.5-year sentence for fraud, was deemed fair by the Court of Appeal, which rejected the convicted man's appeal, considering the original sentence not excessive. The Court of Appeal emphasized that sentencing is the responsibility of the lower court and that the appellate court should only intervene in cases of serious errors or extreme disproportion between the crime and the punishment. The defense attempted to challenge the 7-year sentence, arguing that it was higher than usual for similar cases, but the Court of Appeal was not convinced. Furthermore, the court noted that the only amount found in the possession of the defendant and confiscated as compensation was €550, while the intention to accept a settlement agreement for the amount of €125,000 was not considered a substantial restoration of the damage. His long criminal record, with convictions for fraud over the past 30 years, confirmed the court's decision.
