UK to Double Military Presence in Norway Over Three Years

Published February 11, 2026, 12:44

The UK will double its military presence in Norway over the next three years, increasing the number of troops from 1,000 to 2,000. This move is part of an effort to strengthen Arctic defense against growing threats from Russia, according to British Defense Secretary John Healey. The UK will also participate in NATO's Arctic Sentry mission. The decision comes at a time when Europe is being called upon to take greater responsibility for its own security. Furthermore, the UK and Norway have signed an agreement for joint management of a fleet of frigates to protect underwater cables and gas pipelines.
