Turkey Thwarts Alleged Iranian-Linked Spy Ring Planning Drone Shipment to Cyprus

Turkish authorities announced the dismantling of a spy ring allegedly linked to Iran, following coordinated operations in five provinces. Six individuals were arrested, accused of collecting military and security information, and planning potential attacks, including reconnaissance of the Incirlik Air Base. Reports indicate the network was directed by Iranian intelligence officials, and an Iranian national allegedly planned to transport armed drones from Turkey to Cyprus, through companies he owned, disguising the activities as commercial transactions. Two of the suspects had received specialized drone training in Iran in 2025. The investigation revealed the network used encrypted communication channels codenamed “Güvercin” and was funded through commercial transactions in the drone sector. The arrested individuals have been detained on charges of acquiring classified state information for espionage purposes. The operation was carried out by Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (MIT) in cooperation with the police. MIT has conducted hundreds of operations in 2025, targeting spy networks, armed organizations, and cybercrime activities. This case highlights Turkey's concerns regarding potential espionage activities and the illegal trafficking of weapons, particularly in regions like Cyprus. The full extent and implications of the spy ring are currently under investigation.
