Eurogroup Selects Croatian Vujčić as New ECB Vice President

The Eurogroup has elected Croatian Boris Vujčić as the new Vice President of the European Central Bank (ECB). The election followed a vote among six candidates and was welcomed by the President of the Eurogroup, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, as a significant success. Vujčić has served as the Governor of the Croatian National Bank for three terms and played a key role in his country's accession to the Eurozone in 2023 and the EU in 2013. During the meeting, the need for internal growth in the Eurozone was also discussed, given the challenging economic environment. Commissioner for Economy, Valdis Dombrovskis, emphasized the importance of leveraging flexibility and revising growth plans. The head of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), Pierre Gramegna, highlighted the need for a comprehensive external agenda for Europe and the strengthening of competitiveness and resilience. Regarding developments in Greenland, Pierrakakis noted that the issue was not discussed due to Denmark's absence from the meeting. The discussion is expected to be moved to the next meeting of the Ministers of Finance of the “27” at ECOFIN. The Commission is considering renewing the €93 billion in duties or activating the Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), awaiting decisions from the extraordinary European Council.
