What is Lane Assist, the System Blamed for the PAOK Fans' Accident?

Greece is in shock following the tragic road accident in Romania, which claimed the lives of seven PAOK fans on their way to Lyon for the team's match. One of the injured fans, in a statement to a doctor, reported that the driver lost control of the van due to a malfunction of the Lane Assist system, which locked the steering wheel. Lane Assist is a driving assistance system that helps the driver keep the vehicle within the lane markings. Through cameras, the system recognizes the road markings and intervenes in the steering system when the vehicle deviates from its course. In more advanced versions, the system can automatically correct the vehicle's course. However, the effectiveness of Lane Assist can be limited in cases of poor visibility, worn lane markings, or severe weather conditions. For this reason, it is not the primary means of controlling the vehicle's course. Automatic correction is carried out through controlled intervention in the electric power steering system, with the steering wheel turning gently in the opposite direction. The statement from the injured fan raises questions about the safety of driving assistance systems and the need for proper maintenance and vehicle inspection. The tragedy has caused grief and anger in Greece, with many calling for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
