Changes for National Guard Contract Soldiers Announced by President Christodoulides

The Council of Ministers decided on changes for the Contract Soldiers (SYOP) of the National Guard. The changes include raising the retirement age from 42 to 57 years, increasing the recruitment limit from 27 to 35 years, establishing a merit-based process for advancement to contract non-commissioned officers through written examinations, and increasing the monthly allowance from €100 to €150 (and from €200 to €250 for those serving in special units). President Christodoulides emphasized that strengthening the country's deterrent power is a top priority and that these changes are part of this effort. He noted that the ability to make such decisions stems from economic development, which allows investment in areas such as education, health, and defense. These changes respond to long-standing demands of the SYOP, such as the opportunity for advancement and the improvement of their financial benefits. The government seeks to improve the morale and effectiveness of National Guard personnel while strengthening the country's deterrent capability. This decision is expected to have a positive impact on National Guard personnel, offering them more opportunities for advancement and improving their working conditions.
