Hubble Telescope: AI Helps Discover Rare Astronomical Objects

A new tool utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) has been developed by astronomers, enabling them to identify rare astronomical objects within the Hubble Space Telescope's image archive. The tool, named AnomalyMatch, examined nearly 100 million images in just 2.5 days and discovered approximately 1,400 rare objects, over 800 of which had never been documented before. AnomalyMatch was trained to recognize anomalies in the data, such as jellyfish galaxies with gaseous tentacles, ring and arc galaxies, and gravitational lenses. The research team validated the findings, confirming the tool's high effectiveness in identifying rare phenomena that would be difficult to detect through manual searching. The study, published in the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics,” highlights the potential of AI to accelerate astronomical discoveries and reveal new mysteries of the universe.
