High Non-Compliance Rates in Online Sales of Chemicals in Cyprus

The Labour Inspection Department (LID) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance has identified high rates of non-compliance with legislation in online stores selling chemicals in Cyprus. The inspections, conducted as part of a pan-European campaign, focused primarily on supermarkets, DIY stores, and large department stores. The results showed a non-compliance rate of approximately 80%. The checks focused on products such as household cleaners, paints, adhesives, inks, pool chemicals, and others. The LID reminds that the distribution of chemical products via the internet is governed by European Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation), which requires appropriate website design and the provision of information on product hazards. Specifically, websites must clearly display product labels or list all hazard information as stated on them, in the Greek language. This must be done before the completion of the purchase, so that consumers are fully informed of the potential risks and take appropriate safety measures. The LID calls on economic operators to comply with the legislation, warning of the imposition of administrative sanctions in case of non-compliance. Operators can contact the LID for clarification.
