Doomsday Clock Ticks Closest to Midnight Ever: 85 Seconds to Catastrophe?

Published January 27, 2026, 21:09

The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic timepiece representing the likelihood of a global catastrophe, has been set to 85 seconds before midnight. This marks the closest it has ever been to representing global destruction, just four seconds less than the previous year. The decision was made by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists after consultations with eight Nobel laureates. The scientists express concern over the increasing aggression and nationalism of major powers, such as Russia, China, and the United States, as well as the collapse of international agreements. They believe this competition undermines the cooperation necessary to address global risks like nuclear war and climate change. Furthermore, they warn of the impending expiration of the New Start treaty for nuclear arms reduction and the push for the deployment of expensive anti-missile systems. Simultaneously, they highlight record levels of carbon dioxide emissions and the rollback of climate change policies. Maria Ressa, a journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, emphasized the “information Armageddon,” referring to the rapid spread of misinformation and the exploitation of societal divisions. The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 during the Cold War and initially set to seven minutes before midnight. Over the years, the criteria have been expanded to include other threats.
