Outcry in Northern Cyprus Over Land Grant to Turkish University

Strong reactions have been triggered in the occupied territories over the granting of 3,500 acres of land in Karpasia to the Istanbul Technical University. 62 organizations express their opposition, arguing that forests belong to the people and are a common good. The decision was approved by the “parliament” with the votes of the parties of the “governing coalition” and the Republican Turkish Party (RTP). The organizations accuse the “parliament” of a “conscious intervention” against the “rule of law” and “abuse of legislative power,” as it bypasses judicial oversight. They believe that this grant constitutes an attack on nature and undermines the legal battle to protect the forests. The organizations demand the immediate withdrawal of the “legislation,” the cessation of bypassing “judicial procedures,” and respect for the “rule of law” and “judicial independence.” They call on all citizens to protect nature and the future of the country. Following the reactions, the RTP announced that it would consider withdrawing the “bill,” taking into account public concerns and its commitment to a policy that takes criticism into account.
