Cameras on Police Uniforms and Vehicles: Bill Advances in Cyprus

The bill allowing the use of body-worn cameras on police uniforms and in vehicles is in its final stages of approval, expected to be brought before the Plenary Session of the Parliament before its dissolution. Despite initial reservations, the bill has undergone changes and is considered an important tool for combating organized crime and protecting both police officers and citizens. The Data Protection Commissioner has expressed concerns regarding the recording of physical searches, emphasizing the need to protect the sensitive data of those being searched. The Police emphasize the importance of recording searches to avoid complaints. The Cyprus Police Association believes that the bill, with appropriate training, will help its members avoid false accusations and perform their duties more effectively. Finally, it was agreed that the evidence will be destroyed annually and that undercover police officers will have the option not to use the cameras.
