Significant Inflows Expected in Cyprus Dams, but Caution Remains

Significant water inflows are expected in Cyprus' dams due to recent rainfall, however, the Water Development Department (WDD) remains cautious. The Director of the WDD, Eliana Tofa-Christidou, stated that the final inflows will become clear at the end of April. The Kouris dam, the largest in Cyprus, shows greater fullness compared to last year (21.2% versus 20.3%), but the WDD emphasizes the need for prudent water resource management for the coming years. 8 million cubic meters of water have already been transferred from Arminou via the Southern Conveyor, highlighting the importance of water resource management. The WDD stresses the need for daily and diligent management of water flows to ensure adequacy. Regarding the possibility of water cuts during the summer months, Ms. Tofa-Christidou stated that this will depend on the final flows recorded at the end of the hydrological year. The effort must be collective, with consumers saving water and the Water Boards (EOA) repairing their networks and reducing losses. In other dams in Limassol, the Germasogeia dam recorded a fullness of 14.1% (compared to 26.7% last year), while the Polemidia dam shows a fullness of 40% (compared to 39.6%). The condition of the dams is closely monitored and water resource management remains a priority.
