End to 'Orphan' Citations from Cameras

The Police are awaiting the release of funds from Parliament to activate the Photo Radar List system, which will solve the problem of undelivered citations from the speed camera system, including approximately 12,000 relating to vehicles with t/c license plates. The system will be linked to the database of violations and will allow the delivery of citations on the spot, during the control. The accumulation of undelivered citations arose after the full implementation of the camera system. In many cases, offenders did not receive notifications or could not be located. For t/c vehicles, there was no mechanism for immediate identification and delivery at the checkpoints. The Photo Radar List will allow the check of pending fines during traffic controls and at the checkpoints. The Police have received an opinion from the Legal Service confirming the legality of serving citations at control points. The cost of the system is estimated at 150,000 euros. There are difficulties with rented vehicles, but the Police are trying to find solutions. The activation of the Photo Radar List is expected to significantly improve the effectiveness of law enforcement and increase revenue from fines.
