Consumer Association: 87% of Banned Products Remain Available Online

The Cypriot Consumer Association highlights that 87% of recalled or prohibited products remain available online, emphasizing the need for strengthened supervision and compliance mechanisms. This announcement coincides with World Consumer Day, with this year's theme focusing on product safety. According to an OECD report, 2023 saw a record number of alerts in the European Safety Gate system, a 13% increase compared to 2022. National authorities also increased their actions by 35%. The Association emphasizes that product safety is a fundamental human right and calls for strengthening the role of consumer organizations in policymaking. It also proposes close collaboration between governments, businesses, and consumer organizations to ensure safety at every stage of a product's lifecycle. The need for cross-border safety systems leveraging modern tools and innovation is highlighted, as well as the need for unified global standards and regulatory frameworks. The lack of effective control online allows the continued availability of dangerous products, endangering consumer health and safety. The Cypriot Consumer Association calls on all stakeholders to contribute to creating a safer market where products are reliable and consumers feel protected.
