Syria: Authorities Ban Sale of Alcohol in Restaurants and Bars

Syrian authorities have banned the sale of alcohol in restaurants and bars in Damascus, marking a clear move towards imposing conservative measures. According to the decree, operating licenses for nightclubs and bars will be converted into coffee shop licenses, while the sale of alcohol is only allowed in sealed bottles, for pickup from the store and only in areas with a Christian population. This decision comes after the takeover of power by the new president, Ahmed al-Sarra, 15 months ago, and is considered to reflect the influence of Islamist elements in the government. Bar owners have three months to comply with the decision, while many expect the closure of their establishments. Already, restaurants have begun to restrict the availability of alcohol. Despite al-Sarra's assurances to safeguard rights and freedoms, the decision on alcohol is considered contrary to the spirit of the new Constitutional Declaration. In addition, the authorities have proceeded with the arrest of individuals who do not observe the Ramadan fast, demonstrating the increasing pressure to impose religious rules.
