Cyprus Electricity Authority Unions Protest Private Interests and Lack of Planning

The trade unions of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) held a three-hour work stoppage protesting the promotion of private interests and the lack of strategic planning by the state in the energy sector. They accuse certain elected representatives of the state of acting in favor of private companies, while pointing out the lack of response from the Minister of Energy to their requests. The unions emphasize the work of the EAC, such as the rapid response to emergencies, such as the fires in Limassol, and believe that any strategy against the Organization is unjustified. They criticize the passage of legislation allowing private individuals to build electricity networks, while stating that the EAC has connected more than 97,000 photovoltaic systems to the grid. In addition, they point out the need to upgrade the power plant in Dekelia, which operates with old units. They call for investment in modern technologies and a more long-term strategy in the energy sector, based on the public interest and environmental protection. The unions are asking for support from consumers and are committed to continuing their struggle to defend the interests of the EAC and Cypriot society.
