Increased Rainfall Expected in Cyprus Over Next Two Weeks – Flood Risk

The Department of Meteorology's medium-range climate forecast predicts increased rainfall in Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean for the period of March 19-31, 2026. Estimates indicate rainfall levels above normal for the season, with the possibility of local flooding. Despite the improvement in soil moisture, the hydrological situation remains demanding due to low water reserves, making rational water use essential. According to the World Meteorological Organization, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Syria are also expected to be affected. Atmospheric circulation is characterized by westerly flow and the descent of cold air masses from the north, while in the Mediterranean region, weak but dynamic structures are forming that enhance instability. The Department of Meteorology is monitoring the evolution of conditions and will issue relevant updates. Weekly analyses indicate that rainfall levels will range between 25 and 75 millimeters, while higher amounts may be recorded in exposed areas. The probability of rainfall above normal levels exceeds 90% in the first week and ranges between 70% and 90% in the second week.
