Rubio, Syrian, and Kurdish Officials Meet at Munich Security Conference

At the Munich Security Conference, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with his Syrian counterpart, Assad al-Shiban, focusing on the recent agreement between Syria and Kurdish forces. The meeting focused on the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria, while the United States expressed its support for the "integration agreement" with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The meeting was also attended by the commander of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi, and Kurdish official Ilham Ahmed. The agreement provides for the integration of Kurdish forces into the Syrian state. The US had supported Kurdish forces in their fight against ISIS. Abdi described the meeting as “positive”, emphasizing the discussion of the integration process and the situation of the Kurdish people. In parallel, Damascus appointed a Kurdish governor in the province of Hasaka, according to the implementation of the agreement.
